The Expressive Landscape: A Practical Framework for Plein Air & Studio Oil Painting with Graham Webber ROI

Course Date: Sunday 15th August – Friday 20th August 2027

(Painting days: 16th- 19th August)

Overview

Join Graham for a painting retreat at the beautiful Westcott Barton estate, where we will immerse ourselves in the rich variety of subjects found both within the grounds and beyond. This retreat will focus on developing your own painting style, working directly from life and in the studio to capture atmosphere, structure and light. Rather than following a rigid formula, you will work within a clear, practical framework designed to give you total creative freedom while keeping your paintings grounded and strong.

Over the course of the week, we’ll use just three primary colours and white to explore the estate’s characterful buildings, gardens, trees and surrounding landscape. Together, we will examine perspective, colour temperature, tonal values and composition - using these core principles as a foundation to simplify complex scenes and express your individual vision.

To keep your brushwork lively, intuitive and responsive, we’ll work across a variety of board sizes. Small, 30-minute studies will help you make bold, instinctive decisions without overthinking, while larger pieces offer room to apply your personal style with greater depth and nuance.

We’ll venture further afield with a minibus trip to the dramatic Valley of Rocks. Here, you’ll apply your framework to the striking cliffs, sea views and rocky formations. Please note that this day may involve a short section of steep walking. For those who prefer a gentler pace, you can remain painting at Westcott Barton or use the facilities at the Valley of Rocks, where a café, seating and amenities are available.

With a wealth of subject matter available, this retreat offers the structure you need to paint with confidence, break free from habits and refine your authentic approach to landscape painting.
