One Day Plein Air Painting Course with Maria Rose

About the Tutor

Maria will be leading a one day ‘plein air’ painting day at Westcott Barton, capturing the beauty of Spring in Devon outdoors, in a fresh and immediate way.

Maria Rose is part of the UK’s growing plein air movement, with a contemporary take on the great British landscape painting tradition. Maria works mostly outside in the elements, letting the seasons guide her.

Maria has exhibited with the Royal Institute of Oil painters, the South West Academy, the Chelsea Art Society, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the New English Art Club and is a member of the British Plein Air Painters. Maria was a contestant on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2018.

Maria was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (AROI) in 2022.

Overview

Maria will introduce the principles of ‘plein air’ painting, working outdoors from life. You will gain confidence to paint more freely within a shorter space of time, respond quickly, yet accurately, improve your colour mixing and application of oil paint and reacting more instinctively to create a lively and fresh landscape paintings responding directly to nature.

Maria will demonstrate the practices she follows when painting outdoors. You will be able to spend ample time outside, but with a studio to retreat to as needed.

Teaching Day

Please note: This course is non-residential

Arrive from 9am for tea and coffee and make a start at 9.30am with a demo followed by a painting session outside.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are freely available to help yourself to during studio breaks.

Lunch will be available from 12.30pm.

The afternoon session will start around 1.30pm with another demo and then more time outside painting. Maria will be on hand to guide you throughout.

We will aim to finish at around 4.30pm with a look at the work made throughout the day and leaving at around 5pm.

Course spaces are limited to 12 participants to ensure Maria has the ability to provide you with personal advice and support during your time here.

Skill Level

This course will best suit those with some experience with oils or acrylics who are looking to gain experience working outside from life.


Painting Media

Oils or Acrylics on canvas.

Some materials can be provided but artists are encouraged to bring their own paints and equipment.


You will need to bring:

An outdoor sketching easel or pochade and tripod, your preferred paints (oils or acrylics), 3-4 small panels or canvasses, (smaller is better for plein air e.g. 24 x 30cm), hog and synthetic bristle brushes, low odour paint thinner, sketchpad and preferred sketching tools (pencils, charcoal etc). A pdf document containing full details about recommended paint colours, brush sizes, grounds and studio sundries will be emailed to you nearer the time of the course.

The cost for the day is £95 per person.
