Overview

Set in the beautiful Devon countryside, the first two days of this course have been designed to help you improve your sketching and en plein air painting. Paul will be demonstrating as well as being on hand as you work on your own compositions.

Day three will allow you to develop your sketches and en plein air paintings into a larger, studio painting. Paul will work with you develop your ideas and help bring your painting to life.

Itinerary

Upon arrival on the Tuesday afternoon, at around 3pm, you will be greeted by the team at Westcott Barton.

After settling in to your accommodation and meeting your fellow artists, Paul will talk to you about the plan for the next 3 days, before time to enjoy dinner together and the chance to wander in the grounds to find inspiring places to draw and paint.

Breakfast will be served at 8.30am and students will then gather in the studio at around 9.30am.

- Start the day in the studio with an introduction to sketching and painting outdoors.

- Watch a demonstration by Paul to show how to use these techniques to capture the essence of the landscape.

- Finish the afternoon back in the studio to discuss the day’s painting over tea and cake.

Painting Day 2:

- Spend the day drawing and painting the landscape in two locations in north Devon, including a demonstration by Paul and with expert guidance on hand throughout the day.

- Finish the day back in the studio to decide on a ‘studio painting’ for day 3 based on your drawings and paintings.

Painting Day 3:

- Spend the day in the studio developing your sketches and paintings from days 1 & 2 into a larger landscape painting.

- Day 3 will include a demonstration to illustrate some of the techniques you may find useful in working up your drawings and plein air work into a studio masterpiece!
